The Beatles and their impact on modern medical Imaging

Joachim Hornegger

Erlangen

Medical imaging is one of the most important driving forces both in medical engineering and medicine. There is no doubt that it had and still has a huge impact on today’s routine medical care like prevention, diagnosis and therapy. One of the most remarkable innovations in the field is computed tomography (CT). In the 70-s Sir Godfrey Newbold Hounsfield built the first CT-system while being a researcher at EMI Central Research Laboratories in Hayes, United Kingdom. In this talk the history of CT will be revisited and illustrated by examples. The major focus of the lecture, however, will be on the algorithmic challenges and improvements CT has experienced over the past 30 years including some insight in the nice mathematics that is required to perform image reconstruction from x-ray projections.

All are cordially invited.
