Poznan is one of Poland’s oldest cities with a history dating back over a thousand years, and is also associated with the birth of the nation. Spoiler alert: this expedition offers the once in a lifetime chance of sitting in the stone throne of Poland’s first rulers.
Join us in the oldest part of Poznan – Ostrów Tumski, the cathedral island. It is here that not only the history of the castle and the city, but also of Poland began. Duke Mieszko I was probably baptized here in 966, and thus joined the ranks of the European rulers. You will have a chance to see how high the ramparts of the medieval castle were, have a look at the oldest Polish cathedral with its Golden Chapel and cross Porta Posnania, the Gate of Poznan – a modern multimedia heritage interpretation center which is also one of the most interesting avant-garde architectural realizations of recent years.

Book your place at the Visit Poznań stand! In the XIII century the city of Poznań was relocated to the left bank of the Warta River, while its centre – the Old Market Square and the Town Hall – became the symbols of the city self-government. Przemysł I, the ruler of Greater Poland, moved his seat to Przemysł Hill, an area rising above the city, which later became a place of residence for Polish kings visiting Poznań. Inhabitants of Poznań were most proud of Fara Church having the highest steeple in the town. Numerous wars and fires caused the old temple to be dismantled and the city parish moved to the Baroque post-Jesuits church. Its monumental façade and interior are probably the most beautiful representation of Polish Baroque.
